Principal's Message for the New Academic Year - Review of the Anniversary Celebrations, School Patron Saint, Digital Education, and Plans for the New School Year

"Twenty-five years under God's loving care, nurturing students and building the future." With the successful conclusion of the pilgrimage to Italy led by Auxiliary Bishop Most Rev Joseph Ha Chi-shing, our two-year- long 25th Anniversary Silver Jubilee celebrations have also come to a perfect close. Looking back, the anniversary programme was filled with memorable events. It began with the Kick-off Ceremony officiated by Vicar General Rev Peter Choy Wai-man; we were then honoured to welcome Dr Choi Yuk-lin, JP, Secretary for Education as the guest of honour at our Graduation Ceremony. Students from the kindergarten, primary and secondary sections jointly staged the original musical The River of Life at Ko Shan Theatre, and later held the visual arts exhibition “The Flow of Life, Years in Full Bloom” at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Other highlights included our 2,500 m Anniversary Run, a warm and vibrant Joint Open Day, and the MV production of our anniversary theme song, Walking with You. Finally, we gathered for a Thanksgiving Mass officiated by Most Rev Joseph Ha and a celebratory banquet of 34 tables attended by students, staff, parents and alumni from our three sections. Throughout these events, our students demonstrated remarkable commitment and excellence, showcasing the outstanding team spirit of TCCS and earning high praise from guests and participants alike.

To further encourage teachers and students to live out the spirit of our school motto “Strive for personal best and spread love”, and to cultivate love that inspires personal growth, the school has in recent years been seeking a modern saint to serve as our school patron. Throughout this journey of discernment, teachers and students have continued to walk in synodality, and during our 25th Anniversary celebrations, a clear consensus was reached. Beginning this academic year, the school officially adopts St. Teresa of Calcutta as our Patron Saint. We aspire to follow the example of Mother Teresa, responding to Jesus' call of “I thirst”, and embracing her spirit of “doing small things with great love”. In humility, we seek to care for the weakest among us, respect life, and uphold the dignity of every human person.

At this point, I would like all students to remember and put into practice two Scripture verses: ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ (John 13:34) and ‘Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ (Matt hew 25:40).

In response to the global trend of digital transformation, our nation has explicitly emphasized the integrated development of education, technology and talent in the 15th Five-Year Plan, and proposed the holistic promotion of the “Artificial Intelligence + Education” initiative. The guiding principles are “nurturing people as the core, prioritizing literacy, being application-oriented, and harnessing AI for good” (EDB Circular Memorandum No. 156/2026). In line with this direction, our school will actively promote digital education in accordance to EDB’s Blueprint for Digital Education Development in Primary and Secondary Schools, implementing related measures systematically on three core areas: school planning, teacher professional development, and student learning.

To further highlight the importance of digital education, the sixth floor of the school campus will officially become the “Digital Education Floor” starting this academic year. Facilities include a newly completed IT Room, Campus Radio Station, Multimedia Visual Arts Room, and InnoHub. In teaching and learning, we will integrate AI and the ‘Four-learning Model’ (self-learning, collaborative learning, mutual learning, guided learning) in an organic manner, in order to enhance the effectiveness of self-directed learning. The school will also continue to strengthen teacher professional training and invest in the necessary resources and support.

At the same time, the Three-Year Development Plan launched last academic year has now entered a new phase, with the aim of continuously enhancing students' academic performance and personal development. Below is a review of its two major areas of concern:

Major Concern 1: Enhancing students’ moral character and learning competence

1. Deepening values education: The school will strengthen the cultivation of students’ values and moral development, including the core values    of Catholic education, priority values and attitudes, and national security education.

2. Cultivating Self-directed Learning Habits: Through the teaching and learning strategies under the ‘Four-learning Model’, students will become centre of learning. Their generic skills and learning effectiveness will also be enhanced.

Major Concern 2: Nurturing students with positive values and encouraging a healthy lifestyle with the core of Catholic education

1. Cultivating positive values and attitudes: The school will focus on enhancing students’ sense of responsibility and perseverance. This includes closer monitoring of homework submission, attendance, and punctuality, as well as encouraging subject departments to organise activities related to values education.

2. Promoting the 4Rs Mental Health Charter: The school will foster the holistic and healthy development of our students. This includes strengthening student leadership roles, optimising service-learning mechanisms, and organising activities and talks related to the 4Rs Charter and the Three-tier Support Model, with the aim of promoting a positive and healthy school culture.

In the coming academic year, the school will continue to strengthen the learning atmosphere and class management, fostering in students a serious attitude towards their studies as well as courtesy, discipline and respect for rules. We will also place greater emphasis on information literacy, guiding students in the responsible use of digital devices and technology.

This year's theme of Education Day is “Complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, thinking one thing” (cf. Philippians 2:2). These words gently remind us to learn how to live with others, learn how to love, and move forward together on the same ‘wavelength’. When we are ‘of the same mind’, it is like tuning into the same frequency, enabling us to understand and support one another more fully. To ‘love’ is not merely a feeling, but a willingness to care for others and build sincere relationships. In school life, this means accepting and embracing our classmates while being attentive to the needs of others.

“Thinking one thing” also inspires us to focus on matters of greater meaning: things that benefit both ourselves and others, things of lasting value, and things connected to life and faith. In other words, it invites us to move from ‘looking only at ourselves’ to ‘caring for others’, and even to ‘lifting our eyes together towards higher and greater goals’.

In our warm school family, we learn together in the classroom, and to become people who know how to love, think deeply, and care for others. When we are willing to adjust ourselves to be ‘of the same mind’ with others and work together for the greater good, not only will teachers, classmates and we ourselves rejoice, but God too will be filled with joy through our shared journey.

資訊素養：科技創新，領先未來

面對數碼世代的挑戰，東天人早已走在前沿。中學部今年共獲近40個國際，內地及本地的資訊科技獎項包括：Adobe Specialist Championship Hong Kong金獎、日本東京JAPAN CUP 2025機械人大賽VIQRC聯賽亞軍、VIQRC評審推薦獎 及VRC 活力獎，以及InnoBotZ第二屆離島盃卓越獎、設計獎、啟發獎及金獎等多項殊榮，展現出精湛及領先的技術與創意。在第二屆全球機械人挑戰賽中，小學部奪全球總冠軍，以及InnoBotZ第二屆離島盃獲傑出機械獎，證明小學在這領域上發展潛力無限。

語文能力：雙語並進，靈活運用

語言是溝通的橋樑，也是思維的工具。在這方面東天人同樣表現優異。在校際中文集誦、全港英文說故事比賽及英文寫作公開比賽中，中學部接連奪冠，展現語文造詣。小學部則在校際中文集誦奪冠；在香港學校戲劇節英語話劇比賽中奪取多個獎項，對語文能力流露自信。

生涯規劃：關懷社群，規劃未來

東天人不僅關注個人成長，也積極參與社會服務。中學紅十字會在全港青年護理比賽中奪得護理問答冠軍，展現護理與健康的專業認識；公益少年團團員於獎勵計劃獲橙色徽章及紫色徽章；在多元智能躍進計劃及挑戰營中取得最佳學員，並獲頒發「金帽子獎」。小學部在公益及社會服務方面獲得(香港優秀學生公益服務獎嘉許，體現關懷社群的精神。

健康生活與體藝發展：身心並重，多元發展

在體育與藝術領域中，東天人同樣光芒四射。無論是中學部及小學部，在學界、區際及校際比賽中，在田徑、游泳及多項球類比賽中，皆獲得多項團體及個人三甲獎項。此外，在本年第六十一屆學校舞蹈節比賽中，中學部勇奪三人舞乙級獎及獨舞優等獎；小學部也取得初小及高小甲等獎；在聯校音樂大賽中，中學合唱、獨唱都取得金獎，樂器獨奏、合奏中小都取得銀獎，在舞台與運動場上綻放異彩。

東天人臥虎藏龍，以上的表現不僅是學生個人努力的成果，更是東涌天主教學校教育理念的具體呈現。在七個學習宗旨的發展下，東天人正一步步走向世界，成為具備品格、能力與視野的新一代領袖。

As we look back on the last academic year, we have so much to celebrate and be proud of! Our Tung Teens have again shone brightly in competitions, big and small. These impressive achievements would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication and commitment of our teachers, as well as our students’ enthusiastic participation and determination to push themselves to reach new heights. I would like to express my gratitude to them once again.

In recent years, the Education Bureau has been actively promoting The Seven Learning Goals of Primary and Secondary Education1. In fact, our students have well demonstrated the learning outcomes of the 7 Learning Goals in competitions and assessments. These include:

As the new school year commences, we continue to implement our 3-year development plan – to cultivate and strengthen students’ self-directed learning, qualities of ‘Tung Teens’ and empathy. On top of that, we will work to strengthen the following areas:

close alignment between the school’s development strategies and the Seven Learning Goals, with National and Global Identity, STEAM Education and Healthy Lifestyle (including sports, the arts and environmental education) as priorities enhancing the learning atmosphere and firm implementation of effective measures to boost academic performance strengthening class management to foster students’ focus on academics, motivation and proper conduct (e.g. attire, attendance and appropriate use of electronic devices) preparation for the 25th School Anniversary celebration and fortification of through-train connections and promotion effective development and use of campus facilities to promote curriculum optimization and learning effectiveness

As always, the school will continue to uphold the five Catholic Core Values, fully cater to the diverse learning needs of our students, provide all-round learning experiences, promote whole-person development and nurture them to become true ‘Tung Teens’ that embody the spirits of Trust, Cherish, Contribute and Sacrifice.

With the local epidemic situation subsiding, our school has been moving steadily forward along the path to normalcy. Through the re-launching of Morning Jog, which had been suspended for three years, the many post-exam activities held as well as several exchange tours to the Greater Bay Area, our students should have witnessed and experienced firsthand the return of vibrant school life in TCCS.

Our various campus infrastructure and renovation projects were ongoing during the summer vacation. In addition to the school library, Multi-media Visual Arts Room, IT & STEM Makerspace, English Learning Centre and other improvement works, we are also welcoming 10 new facilities this academic year. They include:

(1) installation of interactive panels in 10 special rooms;

(2) installation of large format displays and a new digital sound system in the school hall;

(3) installation of a digital public address system;

(4) installation of large format displays, a VR biking system and a trophy display case in the covered playground;

(5) addition of a fitness assessment software with optical heart rate sensors;

(6) addition of a chip timing system;

(7) installation of large format displays and air conditioners in the school lobby;

(8) addition of a video conferencing system in Student Activity Centre;

(9) installation of air conditioners in the tuck shop;

(10) renovation work: Staff Room, General Office, School lobby, Room G01, Medical Room, Social Worker's Offices and Meeting Rooms.

These new facilities do not simply serve to make the school campus more beautiful and comfortable. More importantly, they provide ideal conditions for curriculum optimization and whole-person development so that students' learning interest and effectiveness can be enhanced. We hope our students will make good use of and cherish these facilities.

This year, our school development will continue to align with the Seven Learning Goals of Secondary Education[1], as well as the major initiatives outlined in the Youth Development Blueprint in the 2022 Policy Address: STEAM, Professional Development of Teachers, Vocational and Professional Education and Training, and National Education[2]. Special emphasis will be placed on national security /national education and broadening students' horizons. Furthermore, entering the second year of the three-year plan, we are stepping up efforts in addressing our two major concerns: 1) Enhancing learning effectiveness: the incorporation of the 5 Catholic core values in the curriculum, developing students into self-directed learners through the habits of doing pre-lesson preparation and note-taking, and 2) Fulfilling the vision and mission of Catholic education, upholding and passing on the 5 Catholic core values, nurturing students to be self-loving 'Tung Teens' and cultivating an empathy-centered school. The school will engage students in reflection at personal, class and committee levels, and we anticipate an improvement in students' behaviour, motivation, learning attitude and empathy. Alongside the strict enforcement of these development plans, measures to enhance students' academic performance and stronger class management, we strive to establish right moral values and self-directed learning strategies in our students so that they grow to shine as true 'Tung Teens'.

We are once again launching a new academic year under the cloud of COVID-19. Staying healthy, along with protecting oneself and others, remains our students' top priority. Even with the majority of our students having received two vaccine shots, we must never drop our guard. We should maintain personal hygiene, observe all applicable social distancing and anti-epidemic measures, and get vaccinated.

Lately, the Education Bureau has reviewed the requirements for the resumption of whole-day classes and extra-curricular activities. We all hope that our students can enjoy normal school life, and experience healthy development of their physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Therefore, the school strongly encourages students to receive vaccinations timely, including the third dose, which helps to create a favourable environment for early resumption of normal schooling.

This academic year marks the beginning of a new school development cycle. We carry on to make 'enhancing learning effectiveness' and 'fulfilling the vision and mission of Catholic education, upholding and passing on the 5 Catholic core values, nurturing students to be self-loving "Tung Teens" and cultivating an empathy-centered school' our major concerns. Our initiatives include incorporating Catholic core values into the classroom, promoting pre-lesson preparation and note-taking habits, correcting misbehavior through engaging students in different levels of reflection, as well as building empathy in students. With collective efforts, we wish that our students live Christian values, embrace active learning and grow to be self-loving and empathic Tung Teens.

In this new academic year, the school is also adopting a 55-minute-per-lesson timetable to maximize learning effectiveness. I take this chance to urge students to treasure their face-to-face learning time, prepare well for lessons and follow the active learning strategies, such as taking notes, to achieve the best possible learning outcomes.

The 20th Anniversary Mass and the Hong Kong Disneyland Activity Day held in 2021 have drawn a close to our 20th Anniversary year. With the completion of the 4 infrastructure projects: Library, Student Activity Centre, IT & STEM Makerspace and Multi-media Visual Arts Room, the school ushers in yet another development milestone. We expect that these new learning spaces will create opportunities for curriculum improvement and students' growth, further promote the culture of self-regulated learning and whole-person development, and nurture students' scientific innovation and creativity. We hope that our students will make good use of these new facilities to strive for excellence.

Meanwhile, cases of the Delta variant and other strains have been identified. To protect yourself and others, and to allow the resuming of normal school life, I encourage you to get vaccinated. If the number of students having received COVID-19 vaccines in an individual class level has reached 70% of the number of students in that particular class level, whole-day face-to-face classes and other activities can be arranged for students in that class level. If 70% or more of our teachers, school staff and students in the whole school are vaccinated, we may be able to organize our favourite school activities, including Sports Days and Campus Run.

The social movement and coronavirus pandemic have presented challenges to us in the last two years. I believe that we all treasure our time learning at school. This new school year marks new beginnings and new hopes. We shall continue to boost students' academic and moral development, reinforce students' thinking skills and their abilities in expressing ideas, as well as to implement values education and national security education. We urge our students to set clear goals, be proactive at school, reflect on their learning constantly and work hard. This way, our students will become Tung Teens who embrace the school virtues: Trust, Contribute, Cherish and Shine, and live up to the school motto: Strive for Personal Best and Spread Love.

As a Catholic school, we determine to inculcate the values of Truth, Justice, Love, Life and Family to our students to prepare them for their life and future responsibilities. Following the example of Jesus Christ, we are committed to guiding our students to develop a wholesome personality, good moral values as well as a positive outlook in life. Our school motto 'Strive for Personal Best and Spread Love' reflects on our practices in school. Our students are willing to serve, respect and love others so as to make a peaceful community.

To accomplish the mission and vision of the Catholic church, our school is operated in a through-train twelve-year education mode. Our school comprises two sections (secondary section and primary section) and is supervised by the same Incorporated Management Committee (IMC). "A Through-train Development Committee" is obliged by the IMC to enforce a cross-disciplinary development policy, managing school administration, curriculum and students' growth. We design a twelve-year learning and growth experience to cater for students in different learning stages. We frequently evaluate the overall operation of the school and the effectiveness of the related policies. With the unique advantage of being a through-train school, students' potentials can be fully developed.

Our school shoulders the responsibility of being a community school and caters for the children's education needs in the community. We are devoted to serve the disadvantaged and underprivileged in accordance with the teachings of the Gospel of Christ. Most of our students are from families with working parents living in the neighbourhood of Tung Chung. As educators, we guide students to break through all limitations so as to fully develop their potentials without any restraint or constraint. Students in our school receive equal attention and education opportunity. Each student is an individual who is deserving of respect, fairness and understanding. Our students are nurtured within a respectful, cooperative environment. Our education enables each student to become a well-educated, productive adult able to cope with an ever-changing world.

Jesus said, 'I am the Way; I am Truth and Life. No one can come to the Father except through me.' (John 14:6) Let us follow Jesus Christ and walk in the footsteps of Him in faith. Put into practice our school motto 'Strive Personal Best and Spread Love'. Love our family, flourish in life and uphold justice. Let us work together, construct the kingdom of God and pursue eternal life.
